Hi Everybody,

I've been reading through the forum and I see a lot of posts saying they've been told to wait 6 months after coming off your meds. Initially this is what my rhuemy nurse told me, but my last appt with my consultanin April she said 3 months would be just fine, so we decided to push back when we would ttc.

I wouldn't want to take any chances, but i've been planning 3 months in my head now following my last appointment, bit confused what to do now.

What do you think?

Appreciate your thoughts.

Kind regards,
D

Hi,

We waited 3mths after coming off MTX- it IS 3mths but they always say more to cover themselves. The MTX is apparently out of the system very quickly but it s the possibility it may have hurt or damaged eggs so they like you to wait for 3mths (or 3 cycles) to make sure there are no damaged eggs present...

I was first prescribed MTX when my second boy was 5 months old and I clearly remember my consultant saying 6 months.
I gave him >the look< as I couldn't imagine that particular snowball melting in hell and he said well if you change your mind, six months!
Is it MTX you're on? If I get a chance later I'll have a look see around for you xfx

Thanks for your responses. Yes I'm currently on 25mg of mtx - the injections. I stopped my plaquenil a few months ago so just the mtx and pain killers when needed.

Here is current chapter and verse from UK academia - basically noone really knows.

Inconclusive essentially. And about 2 years old, so a good consultant should know about any more recent and conclusive evidence, though I suspect there still isn't any. Hard studies to do...can't do case control (unethical), probably can't do cohort study (wouldn't easily get the numbers needed for statistical power).

Hence why you are hearing 3 mths from some sources and 6 from others. Sounds like one of those things you will have to decide yourself like Amanda did. Wishing you well! xfx

It is one of those decisions one has to make for themselves and if you trust and like your rheumy then follow his advice.

For me my rheumy is a Professor, an older man so I know he has been a rheumatologist a long time and he knows what he is talking about.

MTX doesn't stay in the system a long time but the medical industry always always cover themselves, with many drugs.

Hi, I'm in same situation as you, in the waiting process for Methotrexate to 'come out of system' or whatever it does, before TTC again. Stopped taking it end of June. I've always been told 3 months by my RA Nurse and consultant, but have read in some of the literature too 6 months. I'm going with the 3 months, but as the others have said you can only make the decision yourself. I certainly know my RA has flared up big time already from not taking it and I'm at about 6 weeks now of having stopped as my joints are certainly letting me know about it!! So I reckon it is out of system already!

Take care and good luck

Ruth x

Hi. I've just been taken off MTX injections as we want to start trying for a baby after our wedding in September. My rheummy has put me on sulphasalazine instead.
So far I'm feeling sick in the morning but it only lasts about an hour. It's definitely not as effective as the injections but at least it's not toxic.
He's told me to wait 6 months this whereas the nurse said 3 is fine. Don't know what to do for the best so reading this helps a bit. Xx
